Inducted 2024

Simon joined the Blacks in ’08. Straight from school as an 18 year old having never played a game of senior football, with soccer his previous chosen sport. With ’08 being the club’s first year in Division 2 in all its 102 year history, the club, as well as some senior players, were looking for young players to fill some of the void lost with player departures… and well.. after his first President’s Keg (the Thursday night before Round 1) ‘Shar-le-lu-jah’ was found.

Simon began his Blacks career in the B Grade – 3 Phase Rhigas & the Socket To Me’s that year, playing Wing. His pace and agility being a formidable strength of his, however his muscle or size certainly was not or ever was. Simon notes that having been called up by the then A grade coach of Tony Roach and playing his A grade debut at home on Bob Neil #1, he went on a ‘camping’ trip with school friends to the Quorn, resulting in missing his first A Grade player Tuesday training.. Safe to safe played 2’s that next week.

However, Simon was soon back into the A grade, a grade that he was lucky enough to have some great coaches and mentors, Tony Roach, Simon Tregezna, Marcus Trimboli, Bruce Lennon, John Paynter, Craig Smith, and Ben Watkins, ending up playing 156 A Grade games for the club.

As his song goes ‘you don’t care much for Football do ya’ Shar-le-lu-jah found there was more than just football to this great football club early on. For example, he was lucky enough to have experienced more than one Blacks Footy trip, with ones to Melbourne, Perth, Singapore, Bali, Cairns, and Darwin. It was more than Football it was the relationships made, Simon reflects on how he was taken under the wings of some older players, with a special mention to Thomas Kurzel but how come the end of his journey he hopes he was able to do a bit the same to those younger players at the club.

A few memories of note; the dominance of 2010 to 2012, being awarded the ANZAC Day medal, and representing the club as a Vice-Captain but also the pain of not reaching the ultimate goal of a premiership over the 16 years of service to playing at the worlds greatest football club, the Blacks.
