Sir Geoffrey Malcolm Badger AO DSc FAA FRACI FTSE FACE FAIM
(10 October 1916- 23 September 2002 Adelaide).
He was Professor of Organic Chemistry from 1955 to 1964.
He received an AO in 1975, and was knighted in 1979.
In retirement he wrote two books, “Explorers of the Pacific” (1988) and “The Explorers of Australia” (2001).
Professor G.M. Badger was the Patron of the Adelaide University Football Club from 1969 to 1976, during the time he was Vice-Chancellor of the University. He proved to be a most loyal follower of ‘the Blacks’, rarely missing a game. His support for the Club and his presence on Saturdays was much appreciated by all players and he carried on the traditions set by his predecessor in Sir George Ligertwood.
Whilst in this office, Sir Geoffrey instituted a Patron’s Trophy which is given to the Captain of the A1 side each season. He presented a perpetual cup to be passed on each year, as well as a pewter mug which is kept by the recipient. This tradition was carried on by his successor Vice-Chancellor, Professor D.R. Stranks and later Patrons.
For his service and support of the Adelaide University Football Club, Sir Geoffrey was elected an Honorary Life Member of the University Football Club in 1977.
